Women served as nurses in the war

Women helped in the war effort at home by manageing family farms and businesses. Most of their contribution to the war, however, was in serving as nurses to the wounded.















The emanicaption Proclamation officially permitted African Americans to enlist in the Union army and navy. Thousands of African Americans
rushed to join the military.
